Peak District

Back in December we had a long weekend in the Peak District.  We stayed at Clover Fields again, which is a lovely quiet site that we knew to have decent hard standing pitches and heated shower rooms.  The musical bathroom block is a cheery bonus.

The weather was pretty rotten to begin with.  We stopped in Bakewell on the way and stocked up on puddings and tarts before heading for the campsite.

The weather started to improve, so we spent a day walking from Ladybower and Derwent resevoirs, where the famous bouncing bomb was tested.  Sadly the museum was not open, but we visited the memorial to the Lancaster crews who didn’t make it back.  Yet again, we weren’t expecting the ducks.

Sunday dawned surprisingly sunny, so we headed off to the Edale valley for a walk up to Kinder Scout.  As ever, our inability to get up early meant we finished the last section of the Penine Way in the dark, luckily making it down Jacob’s Ladder before sunset.  Most of the snow had melted, but there was still some left to play in…

Before leaving Buxton we visited Solomon’s Temple and the lime kilns.

Then it was home, stopping in Ashbourne for some Christmas shopping and a cup of tea.

Happy New Year

Happy New Year to all our readers.

We celebrated New Year’s Eve at the Camping in the Forest campsite near Thetford.  It went pretty much to plan.  We managed to finish work early and despite pretty awful conditions we had an uneventful and fairly quick journey, so had most of the evening to relax and stuff ourselves silly with food.

The weather was still pretty horrible when we arrived, but the lady on reception was ever so friendly and gave us some sweets and a tree.  Here’s  Rosana and our new tree.

Once parked up amongst our new tree’s much taller relations, we got ourselves all set up and proceeded to consume vast amounts of food, mostly cheese based, and prepared to see the new year in with the surrounding wild life.  It was about this time, and possibly triggered by the constant hooting, that Rosana admitted to not really liking owls…

2013 started all sunny and bright, so we headed over to High Lodge in Thetford Forest for a spot of bike riding.

All in all, a lovely end to 2012 and start to 2013.
